Pecans Can Significantly Lower “Bad” Cholesterol

Consuming pecans daily has been shown to lower both total and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels by a significant amount, a study from the University of Georgia has found. On average, total cholesterol dropped about 5% and LDL cholesterol dropped between 6-9%— numbers that are well higher than any improvements documented through exercise-based intervention studies.

“This dietary intervention…was extremely successful,” said Jamie Cooper, a professor and study author. “We had some people who actually went from having high cholesterol at the start of the study to no longer being in that category after the intervention.”

The study lasted for 8 weeks and involved 52 adults between the ages of 30-75. Participants were divided into three groups: two that consumed 68 g (2.4 ounces) of pecans per day as an addition to their diet or as a substitute food and a control group that did not consume pecans.

“Whether people added [pecans] or substituted other foods in the diet for them, we still saw improvements and pretty similar responses in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in particular,” said Cooper.

Daily Naps May Help Preserve Brain Health, Slow Shrinkage

Habitual daytime napping is linked to larger total brain volume, some recent research has found. This could be highly significant because larger brain volume is considered a marker of good brain health and is linked to a lower risk of dementia and other diseases.

“Our findings suggest that, for some people, short daytime naps may be a part of the puzzle that could help preserve the health of the brain as we get older,” said Dr. Victoria Garfield, senior study author.

Researchers from the study analyzed data, including snippets of DNA, from 378,932 people aged 40-69. They estimated that the average difference in brain volume between “habitual nappers” and those less likely to nap could add up to the equivalent of 2.6-6.5 years of aging.

The study did have its limitations, including no information on nap duration. However, the authors pointed out that previous studies indicate that naps lasting 30 minutes or less are best for short-term cognitive benefits.

7 Health Benefits of Ashwagandha, Including Better Sleep

Ashwagandha is a staple herb in Ayurvedic medicine and has been used for at least 6,000 years. One of its most valued traditional benefits is sleep promotion, and research has now confirmed that it can help ease insomnia and supports better quality rest. Vitamin D May Lower Skin Cancer Risk

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that your body manufactures after skin exposure to sunlight. It plays many vital roles, including supporting immune function and acting as a hormone to aid metabolism and mood. Now, some research has found that regularly taking vitamin D could reduce the risk of melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer. Regular vitamin D takers had less than half the risk of melanoma in some cases than those who didn’t take a vitamin D supplement. (More)

Pesticides Make Strawberries Taste Bland

Pesticides are most often discussed because of their potentially harmful health effects. But did you know that they can also make your food taste blander? Researchers recently found that two fungicides— boscalid (BOS) and difenoconazole (DIF)— cause chemical changes in strawberries that subdue their flavor and aroma. The chemical-treated strawberries also had reduced levels of vitamin C. Not surprisingly, a blind taste test found that people consistently preferred to eat the pesticide-free strawberries. (More)

Parabens Linked to Breast Cancer, Commonly Found in Cosmetics

Parabens are a group of chemicals commonly used to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. They are frequently added to cosmetics products— including makeup, hair products, and lotions— to improve shelf-life. Unfortunately, parabens are also hormone disruptors that may increase breast cell growth and potentially raise breast cancer risk. Avoid them by looking for “paraben-free” products and carefully reading labels for anything containing “paraben”. (More)

Colorful Fruits, Veggies May Help Improve Your Vision

Colorful produce, particularly dark leafy greens and yellow or orange vegetables, are rich in compounds like lutein and zeaxanthin that are important for eye health. A recent study involving athletes found that regularly getting these nutrients through food can help improve visual range (how well you can see a target over a distance). The study authors did caution that it would take a while to notice improvements, since everyone’s body processes nutrients differently. (More)
